Overdenture
Overdenture is the name given to a complete or removable partial denture that is bonded to an implant. Where multiple implants are used, they may be combined to form a bridge – one on each end of the bridge being the anchor for the prosthesis, while other teeth serve as abutments (i.e., anchors) for additional prostheses.
Overdentures have three main components: abutments, connecting mechanisms that attach the appliance to the abutment(s), and the prosthesis (also known as the crowns). Often they are referred to as “sidewalk” dentures because, unlike conventional full dentures, which hang on pink gums where there are no teeth present in order to create stability, overdentures rest on natural teeth or implants so they don’t move. The three main components of the overdenture (abutment, connecting mechanism, and prosthesis) can be made from one material or several different ones.
