Osteotomy also known as osteology or bone surgery is a surgical cutting into bone performed by an orthopedic surgeon for correcting skeletal deformities, lengthening short bones, treating infections, realigning bone fractures prior to healing, stabilizing joints & setting bones. Osteotomy can be done internally (involving making an incision) or externally (no incision). There are several types of osteotomy. A dentist needs to be skilled in performing the type of osteotomy that is relevant for their patient’s condition.
