Enamel

Enamel

Tooth enamel, also known as dental enamel or simply enamel, is a thin layer of white/yellow material that coats the dentine of teeth. In humans, dentine is an important component of tooth structure and hardness. The mineral content of dentine varies from one tooth to another depending on the developmental stage and the presence or absence of dentinogenesis imperfecta. As seen in other vertebrates tooth mineralization depends mainly on calcium phosphate precipitation in a hydrated form to produce a stable mineral phase that has a tensile strength sufficient for mechanical stress during mastication. Tooth enamel is composed mostly of minerals but organic components could be present.
